Walch Education Home | North Carolina Overview

North Carolina Overview

Over the past few years we have worked with North Carolina educators across the state, focusing on middle and high school mathematics, science and STEM initiatives. Working with our partner districts, we create materials that are targeted, user-friendly, flexible, and cost-effective.

We are currently concentrating on Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for middle and high school and on supporting North Carolina educators as they transition to the new, rigorous content and instructional practices identified in the CCSS. We have prepared a collection of CCSS resources that allow teachers to infuse their existing programs with CCSS activities and approaches.

Common Core Resources

These 3 Mathematics Daily Warm-ups support implementation of the Common Core State Math Standards, including the Common Core Mathematical Practices, with a firm foundation of important concepts and problem-solving skills.

Daily Warm-ups Pre-Algebra for Common Core State Standards
Daily Warm-Ups Algebra for Common Core State Standards
Daily Warm-Ups Geometry for Common Core State Standards

The popular Building Math Series has been correlated to Common Core State Standards. In Everest Trek, Amazon Mission and Stranded!, middle school students use algebraic thinking and data analysis to solve engineering problems in real world settings. The Building Math series was developed through a partnership with the Boston Museum of Science and Tufts University.

Station Activities for Common Core High School Math Series This 3 book set includes Algebra I Station Activities for Common Core Standards, Geometry Station Activities for Common Core Standards and Algebra II Station Activities for Common Core Standards.

Station Activities for Common Core Math Series - Grades 6,7 & 8
This set of 3 books include multiple sets of activities for each of the strands and the Common Core math requirements of the grade level. The activities consist of four different stations where students work in small groups, moving from station to station once their activities are complete.
Station Activities for Common Core Mathematics Grade 6
Station Activities for Common Core Mathematics Grade 7
Station Activities for Common Core Mathematics Grade 8

English Language Arts Station Activities for Common Core State Standards
- Grades 6-8

This book includes a collection of station-based activities to provide students with opportunities to practice and apply the skills and concepts they learn in class. It contains station activities for each of the following Common Core Standards for middle school English Language Arts: Reading— Literature; Reading—Informational Text; Writing; and Language. Speaking and Listening standards are infused throughout the station activities.

Transition Tasks for Common Core State Standards

Walch has kicked off a development effort around CCSS Transition Tasks for mathematics. This growing bank of problem-solving tasks set in meaningful, real-world contexts target identified content and Mathematical Practices from the CCSS. The activities support teachers in shifting their courses and their instruction to begin to address these enhanced expectations. Please contact us at commoncore@walch.com to learn more.

North Carolina Math 1, 2 and 3

As North Carolina moves forward with plans for high school Math 1, 2, and 3, we're working directly with district leaders to identify and meet the need for appropriate course materials and instructional components.

Other Resources

Several of our resources help students in middle school prepare for the transition to high school math and the more rigorous requirements inherent in the Common Core, new End-of-Course tests and 21st Century learning requirements. This article, by one of our partners, addresses some of the challenges in the transition and underscores the importance of placement as early as 5th or 6th grade: Predicting Student Eighth Grade Mathematics Class Placement.

Here are some of the other programs that Walch Education has developed for North Carolina educators:

North Carolina Foundations of Algebra - Teacher Resource Binder
Foundations of Algebra is a semester-long or full-year course that develops real conceptual understanding of mathematics. The program comes packaged in an easy-to-use, easy-to-adapt 3-ring binder with a CD-ROM containing the entire program on a searchable PDF. A student workbook is also available.

North Carolina Introduction to High School Math - Teacher Resource Binder
The North Carolina Introduction to High School Math was developed with North Carolina educators to prepare high school students for success in Algebra I and future math courses. The program comes packaged in an easy-to-use, easy-to-adapt 3-ring binder with a CD-ROM containing the entire program on a searchable PDF. A student workbook is also available.
