Station Activities for Georgia Mathematics is a 3-book series. It is based on the research showing that students learn new material best when they work in small groups, with hands-on experiences that echo real-world situations. Using Station Activities for Georgia Mathematics, middle school students apply mathematics, employ problem-solving strategies, communicate with one another, and reason through to the answers while working together.
Each of the three books in Station Activities for Georgia Mathematics contains five sets of activities for each of the four strands:
- Number and Operations
- Geometry and Measurement
- Algebra
- Data Analysis and Probability
The grade-appropriate activities consist of four different stations where students work in small groups, moving from station to station once their activities are complete. Students typically spend 15 minutes per station, followed by a debrief discussion.
Instead of standing at the front of the room teaching at students, teachers can guide, mentor, and move among station groups where students are working together.
- Station Activities for Georgia Mathematics is correlated to Georgia Performance Standards, as appropriate, for grades 6, 7, and 8
- The program uses readily available materials and manipulatives (not included)
- Teacher support includes discussion guides (prompts to encourage reflection and synthesis of ideas, suggested appropriate responses, and a listing of common errors and misconceptions identified in current research), answer keys, and material lists
