In partnership with Cobb County, Walch Education took a close look at how Georgia’s 8th grade students study mathematics in summer school. What concepts and skills does the CRCT focus on? How can diverse classrooms master a wide range of content?
Introducing the Georgia Academic Support Program 16 Day Intensive Mathematics, Grade 8. As its name implies, day-by-day this program covers all of the critical mathematics tested by the CRCT. There are more than 100 hours of instruction, all tightly aligned to Georgia Performance Standards. The entire program is attractively packaged in a 3-ring binder, with every lesson completely reproducible.
The results are in! According to Glenda Huff, Mathematics Coach in Clarke County School District, "The 8th grade teachers loved the resource. The planning time was cut in half for a summer program that was packed with content. There was a 12.8% increase in test scores after using this program.”
Each day of Georgia Academic Support Program 16 Day Intensive Mathematics, Grade 8 includes warm-up activities; direct instruction; practice; station activities; and multiple choice practice. In addition to standards correlations, graphic organizers, and assessments, the program covers:
- Day 1: Square Roots, Rational vs. Irrational Numbers
- Day 2: Computation of Square Roots and Rationalizing the Denominator
- Day 3: Integer Exponents, Scientific Notation, and the Pythagorean Theorem
- Day 4: Simplify Expressions, Solve One- and Two-Step Equations, Solve Multivariable Equations
- Day 5: Equations with Variables on Both Sides of the Equation and Absolute Value Equations
- Day 6: One-Variable Inequalities
- Day 7: Relation vs. Function and Linear vs. Nonlinear
- Day 8: Slope and Slope-Intercept Form
- Day 9: Arithmetic Sequences and Slope-Intercept Form
- Day 10: Standard Form of Linear Equations, Scatter Plots, and Lines of Best Fit
- Day 11: Systems of Equations
- Day 12: Graphing Linear Equations on the Coordinate Plane and Systems of Inequalities
- Day 13: Tree Diagrams, the Fundamental Counting Principle, and Compound Probability
- Day 14: Venn Diagrams, Union, Intersection, and Complements
- Day 15: Parallel Lines, Transversals, and Ratio Segments
- Day 16: Review
NOTE: This complete program is also available in a remediation version for use during the Grade 8 academic year.
